Staff Accountant

Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Accountant to join our church’s finance team. This role is responsible for supporting the church’s accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, contributing to the church’s financial stability and maintaining operational efficiency while contributing to its mission. The position reports directly to the CFO.
Key Responsibilities:
- 60% of time dedicated to managing financial records, processing transactions, and ensuring the smooth execution of daily financial activities, including data entry, reconciliations, and payment processing.
- 30% of time focused on assisting the CFO with strategic financial analysis, preparing financial statements, and supporting department budgeting. This includes maintaining financial compliance, upholding accounting standards, and providing financial and budget insights to the CFO.
- 10% Sunday will be focused on the mission of NewHope Church to serve our ministry teams in any capacity as needed. (Guest Experience, Café, Students…)
Key Responsibilities:
1. Transaction Management & Reconciliation:
- Enter financial transactions, invoices, and receipts into the accounting system with high accuracy.
- Reconcile bank accounts, vendor accounts, and financial statements to identify discrepancies and ensure records are balanced.
- Review and verify financial documents for accuracy and compliance with internal policies and regulations.
- Reconcile credit card statements and point-of-sale (POS) transactions regularly, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Ensure deposits are processed and recorded accurately, including contributions, donations, and other incoming funds.
- Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions for audit and compliance purposes.
2. Accounts Payable:
- Execute the daily posting of invoices to Quickbooks ensuring accuracy and timeliness of payments. Execute weekly check runs, direct deposits and bank payments
- Manage the vendor filing ensuring 1099 and W2’s are active, current and properly reported at year end.
- Ensure proper tax separation of sales tax recapture
- Audit, validate and execute the semi-annual sales tax recapture
- Manage the Purchase Request system to ensure timely execution of payment/reimbursement.
3. Data Analysis & Reporting:
- Prepare routine financial reports for the CFO, including summaries of expenses, reconciliations, and outstanding payables/receivables.
- Conduct basic data analysis to identify trends, budget variances, and areas for process improvement.
- Assist with financial forecasting and tracking performance against budgeted figures.
4. Administrative & Support Duties:
- Maintain organized financial records, ensuring compliance with church policies and applicable regulations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries and financial reconciliations.
- Provide administrative support to the CFO and other departments as needed.
5. Accounts Receivable:
- Assist with accounts receivable as needed, processing and ensuring the accuracy on the postings of all gifts, contributions and receipts to NewHope Church.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (preferred).
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field.
- Experience with accounts payable/receivable processes, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Experience with non-profit or church financial operations is a plus.
Skills:
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online) and Microsoft Excel (including functions, pivot tables, and formatting).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
